How to Do-Good

Quick How-To Guide: Start the day with a little silence, scripture (via Forward Day by Day, if you choose) and prayer. Then open your eyes and make it a practice to be hyper-aware of who and what's going on around you. Deploy that deed with confidence when God gives you his signature gentle nudge. This may feel awkward and unnatural. #NoWorries #GoWithIt #DeedWellDone #BlessingsEnsueJustWait

Day Nine in Review

Prayer: Yes
Scripture: Yes
Silence: Yes, but I still feel like I need to be more deliberate about this part

The Day/The Deed: Talk about rest — I have been dreaming about the rest I will have next week when the kids are in the Bahamas with their grandmother for Spring Break. And how I will sit right here in my still home resting. I still have to work, but I can do it — in silence. And without interruption. Bliss. So my deed today was to write said grammy and thank her for the opportunity. I told her how much grandmother getaways meant to me growing up. I used to go each summer to stay with my grandmother in Goliad, Tx. I'll never forget any of it. My brother and I got along well because we shared the common bond of missing our parents and having to be hosed off each night in the front yard. We swam with the other old ladies at The Flipper pool. We ate goulash. After dinner we walked the town with Grandmother's neighbor, Pearl. We explored my great aunt's hoarding room. We had fun. I am grateful the kids will have this kind of experience, and I let her know.

Do prayers for others count? A friend who who just lost her father today is on my mind. She has been a tremendous spiritual role model for me and now she is suffering. I know what it feels like to lose a parent and my heart hurts for her.

Words of encouragement/advice: I saw this on Headline News this afternoon. If this little boy can think of others as he battles cancer, how hard can it be for me to do?

Tonight I went by the Angels for Allison Foundation "meeting," over in Ortega. I'm working on a story for the paper. The Haramis Family lost their beautiful Allison in an accident. Now — through a series of blessings and the uplifting love of friends and family — they are getting ready to help families who have lost a child, and can't afford for a funeral. I came expecting something sad, but their joy was indeed infectious. You should see these bright, colorful, joyful angels they are painting!

Final thoughts: Rest breeds perspective. I am beginning to understand that communicating heartfelt feelings of thanks, sorrow, appreciation and love are most certainly deeds. And they're among the easiest and comfortable actions to achieve. Another observation, deeding becomes easier and easier when it's top of mind.
