How to Do-Good

Quick How-To Guide: Start the day with a little silence, scripture (via Forward Day by Day, if you choose) and prayer. Then open your eyes and make it a practice to be hyper-aware of who and what's going on around you. Deploy that deed with confidence when God gives you his signature gentle nudge. This may feel awkward and unnatural. #NoWorries #GoWithIt #DeedWellDone #BlessingsEnsueJustWait

Day 13 in Review

Prayer: Yes
Scripture: Yes, this morning — in total silence (the kids are in the Bahamas on Spring Break!)
Silence: Tons of it, glory halleluia!

The Deed/The Day: Today I sat in my bathrobe working on my computer until about 2 p.m., but decided to change before my big Skype call from the kids — you know, so they wouldn't think their mom was a total slouch. Needless to say, it was not a big "people day" like Sunday's airport experience. A trip to the gym did not produce many run-ins, although on the way home I torturously considered stopping to see if an old man broken down on the side of the road needed any help. By the time turned around, he'd already helped himself.

I started to feel a little under the gun. I wondered if it was possible to execute successful do-gooding from my couch and computer. Here's the good news — it's totally possible! First I visited a website called "Let's Say Thanks," where you can fire off a letter of thanks on a cute card and send it to a service man or woman overseas. But that felt a little too easy. Next I visited www.wegive.org. It's a website initiative of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. Essentially you can get on there, decide how much you want to give and support specific projects of a variety of local charities. I had the honor of being the first person to support the launch a center to leverage literacy at the Jacksonville Urban League. The first! When I got to the site they had a $0 balance for their program, and when I clicked out there was $25. It was that easy — felt super good!

Funny thing is, I should probably just waited. Two girl scouts knocked on my door selling those #$%!# cookies. $4 later, I have some Tag-a-Longs sitting in the kitchen for someone else to enjoy. Darn sugars.

Words of encouragement/advice: "Having a big impact, doesn't take a big effort." That's the motto of the wegive.org site. What a great idea. There are many programs listed with a 0 balance — or ones that would benefit from a contribution that would help them meet a goal. Be that donor!

Final words: Silence is blissful.

  1. Hate to mention this but -- After the 40 days I think "Your heart must go on and on..." Can you hear Celine singing this?
A blog is a diary that the cat doesn't throw up on or get lost under the bed. PLEASE keep it up?
I'm at the beach but feel free to call me there if you want to pursue the Publix Norma Rae thing. 686-1697
