Scripture: Ps 145,85, 86; 2 Samuel 11:1-27; Acts 19:11-20; Mark 9:2-13
Scripture standout: Mark 9: "7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
His Deed/The Day: Florida is a hot place in the summertime. I wish a cloud would appear and cover me! Today was destined to be a pool day. So I loaded the kids up and we headed there — roundabout, of course, so I could run a couple of errands. We crossed "the tracks" and headed to the highway.
See, we live within spitting distance of "the other side of the tracks." On most carpool mornings, we see ladies of the night doing their business. We see a house that has long been rumored to be a "swingers hangout," and we see plenty of pimps. There is no shortage of folks down on their luck on our road less traveled.
Today was no different. I saw the familiar sight of three bums (hobos, as the kids like to call them) sitting under the shade of a skinny bush. Smoking. Drinking. Waiting. For what, I'm not sure. At that point, the air conditioning in the car was still kicking in, so I could feel how hot they must be sitting out their in the blue blazes. Then the voice came from the cloud: get them something to drink, why dontcha? So I did. After loading my kiddos up with beef jerkey — of all things, on such a hot day! —I bought a jug of water, and dropped it off without being seen on a plastic container the men use as a table. When I stopped the car and actually GOT OUT, the kids were beside themselves wondering what the heck I was doing. And just like kids, when I explained to them I was just giving those guys something to drink, they moved on. They asked me why I didn't just go around the corner of the building and hand it to them.
What happens when you deliberately tweak your conscience to be more aware of meeting others' needs? Every day? And if it happens to be Lent...for 40 days? What does that look like? What deeds would transpire? What blessings come back? How do we listen for direction? Wake up each morning and decide to be intentional about bringing others better into focus with a little prayer, silence and scripture. Let the daily deeding commence! #DoingUntoOthers #OthersFirst #OneDeedADayGo
How to Do-Good
Quick How-To Guide: Start the day with a little silence, scripture (via Forward Day by Day, if you choose) and prayer. Then open your eyes and make it a practice to be hyper-aware of who and what's going on around you. Deploy that deed with confidence when God gives you his signature gentle nudge. This may feel awkward and unnatural. #NoWorries #GoWithIt #DeedWellDone #BlessingsEnsueJustWait
