How to Do-Good

Quick How-To Guide: Start the day with a little silence, scripture (via Forward Day by Day, if you choose) and prayer. Then open your eyes and make it a practice to be hyper-aware of who and what's going on around you. Deploy that deed with confidence when God gives you his signature gentle nudge. This may feel awkward and unnatural. #NoWorries #GoWithIt #DeedWellDone #BlessingsEnsueJustWait

Day 95

Scripture: Psalm 104:25-35, 37b; Acts 2:1-21;  1 Corinthians 12:3b-13;  John 20:19-23

Scripture standout: Ps 104: "27 All creatures look to you
to give them their food at the proper time. 28 When you give it to them,
   they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
they are satisfied with good things."

Acts 2 "3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a]as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken."

1 Corinthians 12: "4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."

Morning thoughts: Today is a day of Solace for the Mommy. I slept in a little bit and David's mom came to take the boys to a movie and maybe even swimming. I am indulging in Housewives of Orange County, my favorite raunchy television show. Bliss!

I think I like that 1 Corinthians verse the best.  Everyone has their own gift and way to share it. We're all sister and brother soldiers marching to the orders of the same leader.

His Deed/The Day: Quickly, his deeds for me were to visit my ailing friend Hikmat who is now home from the hospital and to inquire on the status of a friend who has health concerns. Now onto the good stuff...

Tonight, AJ the "best interpreter," came over for dinner tonight. He is such a bright spot — so positive and happy and bananas. I have been thinking a lot about everybody's different gifts, and it was a blessing to watch this 18-year-old Afghan interpreter share his tonight.

Around my tiny kitchen table tonight were my in-laws, Ed and Agnes, David's sister Margaret and her husband, Tom, Quodrat and Ashraf, AJ, David and I. It was a tight squeeze, but we managed to sit and snarf burgers together. I watched with delight as AJ worked the table crowd with his distinctive brand of humor. At one point he left the table and came back with his clothes rolled different directions and hat on sideways to show us what a good American rapper he is. The whole motley crue of a table was in stitches — even my stepfather-in-law, Ed, who can hardly hear a thing. Earlier, AJ, Quodrat and Ed were sitting at the piano playing together. Thanks to AJ and his lightheartedness and playfulness, the evening felt like a real gift. I admire people who don't screen their joy and freely share their happiness with others.

I compare this to the more disheartening — but sickeningly entertaining — exercise of watching Housewives of OC this afternoon. The gifts those beeyatches shared with each other were so poisonous and visceral. One threatened to "shut that !@#$ down," with a cease and desist letter. Another is divorcing her husband because he's a weanie man. Another got hammered and told her friend that her plumped up lips were too big. I mean, there was nothing positive that came out of that. I wonder what would happen if "AJ the best interpreter" came to one of their dinner parties? What if, by example, he could show them how to be joyful and happy? Would Vickie take Don back and love him for the weanie man he is?

Would Jeana admit she was talking !@#$ about Tamra and apologize,

and would Tamra appreciate Slade for the loving mate he is to Gretchen?

Would Gretchen find life success peddling her QVC hand bags and make up?

My guess is, joy would ensue — and they would all remember the good things about each other, get along and then there'd be no show. And then what would I do with a free hour of down time?
